Saturday night, in the rain, we photographed Kelly and John
On the surface, it didn’t seem like the best night for a couple’s photography shoot in Charlottesville. We had just finished several other sessions--one with a martial artist, another with a fire dancer, and a third and fourth with local models--and close to midnight, it started raining. Kelly and John had been there all evening for another photoshoot Kelly had been part of, and we were all tired. But as the rain started to fall and the outdoor lights began reflecting, it turned into a moment we just couldn’t pass up.
There’s something magical about photography at night. I’m lucky to have my studio here in The Shops at Stonefield. Amongst the shops and the restaurants and the theater, there are so many little spots right outside my door. And at night, in the rain, the neon lights are just perfect.
I chose this photo for the blog for a different reason, though. While I like the juxtaposition of the soft-focus lights with the sharp detail of the rain, and the effect of the lighting we managed to set up, my favorite parts of this image are the smiles. The feelings. That’s what I really wanted to photograph. A beautiful moment between two people who are just happy to be in the arms of the other.
Photography can do so many things: tell a story, explore a mood, define an object. In this case, I think this photo accomplished all of them. Not bad for an impromptu midnight shoot in the rain.
